Kalapalo Ceremonial Masks (Mato Gross)

The Kalapalo are one of 16 ethnic groups who live in the Xingu Indigenous Park Brazi's Amazon Besin. Their sustenance is based primarily on agriculture and fishing. Hunting plays a secondary role due to taboos that forbid them from eating from animals. Fishing is their best source of protein. The Kalapalo believe the spirits live in water. Their masks embody aquatic beings and ususally resemble fish and these maby be either masculine or feminine.

This rather large mask is carved in a thick piece of wood, painted with natural pigments (ochre and black), and the mask's hair and skirt are made with "aruma" reed fibers. {Note: I believe we do not have a mask from the group and it is to be omitted; check with Mr. Jha.}
